Common fault
Why is my oven not heating properly?
Short answer
Most ovens that "stopped working" are still working — they are heating to the wrong temperature and doing it faithfully. The temperature sensor drifts with age and the control obeys it, which shows up as uneven browning or a roast that suddenly takes an extra half hour. An oven producing no heat at all is usually cheaper: on gas, an igniter that still glows but no longer draws enough current to open the valve; on electric, the element or its relay.
