Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero Appliance Repair in San Diego
Two sealed systems, two compressors, two evaporators, and no air passing between the refrigerator and the freezer — that is what Sub-Zero means by dual refrigeration, and it is where every diagnosis starts. A freezer still hard-frozen while the refrigerator drifts warm rules out half the machine before a panel comes off, because the two compartments cannot share a fault when they do not share air. Both compartments climbing together is the other story, and that one begins at the condenser behind the grille.
Nearly everything that fails on these units lives in one of two places, and both are reachable with the appliance standing where it was installed. Behind the grille: the condenser, the condenser fan and the control hardware. Behind the rear panel of whichever compartment is wrong: the evaporator, its fan, the defrost heater and the thermistor that decides when a defrost cycle runs. Which side ages first depends on where in the county the kitchen sits. Along the water in Point Loma, La Jolla, Coronado and Del Mar the grille side goes first, because the fins and the fan motor spend years in air off the ocean. Inland in Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Escondido the fins stay clean and the hours climb instead, so what wears is duty cycle — fan bearings, gaskets that have lost their pull, and a condenser asked to shed heat into a kitchen at the end of a long August afternoon.

Start from the fault instead
- Why is my oven not heating properly?
- Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?
- Why is there water under my refrigerator?
- What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
- Why does frost keep building up in my freezer?
- Why is my wine cooler not holding temperature?
- Why has my ice maker stopped making ice?
Twenty years in this house and the built-in never gave us trouble until that hot stretch, and by Thursday the fresh food side was warm. He had the grille off and showed me the fins, chalky white from the salt air off the water. Cleaned it, new fan, fine since.
One burner on the Wolf clicked and clicked and wouldn't light while the other four were perfect. I was sure the whole ignition setup was done for. He cleaned the electrode and fixed a corroded ground behind it, said it happens this close to the water. Lights first try now.
Fine every morning, warm by five, all through August. Two other outfits told me the compressor was going and quoted me a replacement. He measured at the coil instead of reading the panel and found the condenser fan slowing plus our grille half boxed in from the remodel.
