What a Sub-Zero Built-In Is, and How It Fails
Sub-Zero builds two machines into one cabinet, and working out which of them is misbehaving is most of the diagnosis. Two sealed systems, two compressors, two evaporators, and no air passing between the refrigerator and the freezer: that is what dual refrigeration means. A freezer still hard-frozen while the refrigerator drifts warm rules out half the machine before a panel comes off. Nearly everything that fails on these units lives in one of two places, and both are reachable with the appliance standing where it was installed. Behind the grille: the condenser, the condenser fan and the control hardware. Behind the rear panel of whichever compartment is wrong: the evaporator, its fan, the defrost heater and the thermistor that decides when a defrost cycle runs. Which side ages first depends on how far from the water the kitchen sits. Near the ocean the grille side goes first, because the fins and the fan motor spend years in salt air. Inland the fins stay clean and the hours climb instead — fan bearings, gaskets that have lost their pull, and a condenser asked to shed heat into a kitchen at the end of a long August afternoon.

The visit, step by step
Nothing here is unusual — it is simply what a proper diagnosis on built-in equipment looks like, and it is worth knowing so you can tell the difference.
- Symptom first. What it is doing, when it started, and whether anything changed in the kitchen — a new filter, a power cut, a door left ajar.
- Panels off. Grille, kick plate or rear cover, depending on the unit. Readings at the coil and the fan, water pressure at the inlet where the fault involves ice or water.
- Quote. One figure, parts and labor, agreed before work starts.
- Repair and re-test. The unit is brought back up and verified before the van leaves.
