Thermador Warranty: What It Covers and Which Parts to Use
Thermador backs its appliances with a 2-year limited warranty that covers the entire appliance, both parts and labor, and it applies across the whole catalog: ranges, ovens, cooktops and rangetops, ventilation, warming drawers, microwaves, coffee machines, refrigeration, wine storage and dishwashers. Built-in refrigerators get more than that. Their sealed cooling system carries extra coverage that runs into the twelfth year, and the stainless exterior has lifetime parts-only protection against rust-through. For a San Diego homeowner with a built-in kitchen, knowing where those lines fall decides who to call first, whether the repair is likely to be on you, and which parts belong inside the machine.
What the first two years cover
The core promise is simple: for the first two years, a defect in any part of the appliance is Thermador's to fix, and that includes the technician's time. The written statement printed in the Pro Grand and Pro Harmony range guide spells it out as 730 days counted from the date of original delivery, not from the day you paid or the day the installer finished, so a remodel that left appliances sitting in their crates for months can quietly use up part of that window before you ever light a burner. Cosmetic flaws run on a far shorter clock. Scratches in the stainless, blemishes in the porcelain, chips and dents are covered for only 60 days, which is the reason to walk around every panel with a flashlight on delivery day and report anything you see while it still counts.
- Two-year coverage: ranges, ovens, cooktops, rangetops, ventilation, warming drawers, microwaves, coffee machines, refrigeration, wine storage and dishwashers
- When the clock starts: the date of original delivery
- Cosmetic damage window: 60 days
Extra years on built-in refrigeration
Thermador's built-in refrigerators carry a second layer of coverage aimed at the sealed system, the closed loop that actually pulls heat out of the cabinet. That loop is made up of the compressor, the evaporator, the condenser, the dryer/strainer and the tubing that joins them. From the third year through the sixth, a failure in any of those components is covered for parts and labor; from the seventh through the twelfth, the parts are still covered but the labor to fit them is not. Sealed-system work is the most involved job a refrigerator can need, because the technician has to open the refrigerant circuit, replace the failed component, then evacuate and recharge the system, so the labor share in those later years is substantial. The same refrigerators also have lifetime parts-only coverage against stainless rust-through, which is worth remembering in a city where a great many homes sit within a few miles of the Pacific and salty air finds its way indoors.
- Years 1 and 2: the whole appliance, parts and labor
- Years 3 to 6: sealed-system parts and labor
- Years 7 to 12: sealed-system parts only
- For life: parts-only coverage for stainless rust-through
What warranty coverage usually depends on
A limited warranty is a promise about defects in materials and workmanship, so most claims come down to a handful of practical questions rather than legal fine print. Read the statement that shipped with your own appliance, since terms vary by product, but expect three things to matter. First is proof of the delivery date, because every clock starts there. Second is whether the unit was installed the way its installation instructions describe, with the correct gas type, electrical supply, clearances and water connection; a range converted for the wrong fuel or a refrigerator boxed in without the airflow it needs can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with a defect. Third is ordinary household use. Damage from accidents, misuse, flooding or power problems generally sits outside a defect warranty, as does normal wear on consumables like filters and bulbs. Plenty of owners also search for a Thermador extended warranty. Beyond the sealed-system and rust-through terms above, longer plans are usually service contracts sold by a retailer or another company, and each one has its own rules about who performs the work and which parts go in.
- Keep the invoice or delivery slip that shows the delivery date
- Keep the installation paperwork and the use-and-care guide together
- Register the appliance with Thermador soon after it arrives
Genuine parts, aftermarket parts and who does the work
One of the most useful lines in Thermador's range warranty statement is easy to skim past: hiring a repair shop that has no affiliation with Thermador, or fitting third-party parts, does not cancel the warranty on its own. The catch is in the clause that follows. If outside work or a non-original part causes damage, Thermador accepts no responsibility for that damage, so the risk shifts to whoever did the repair. In practice, during the first two years there is rarely a reason to pay anyone outside Thermador's service network for a covered defect, since the brand is already paying for labor. After that, the decision comes down to fit and risk. Genuine parts are made to the original dimensions and ratings, which matters most on gas valves, burner igniters, oven temperature sensors and control boards, where a near match can mean uneven heat, slow ignition or a safety problem. Aftermarket parts can be perfectly fine for simple items such as knobs or shelf supports, but quality swings widely from one supplier to the next. SK Appliance Repair is an independent service that is not affiliated with Thermador, so if your appliance is still inside its first two years, check with Thermador before booking any visit.
Consumables Thermador lists by part number
Some replacement items are routine purchases rather than repairs, and Thermador prints their part numbers in its spec sheets and use-and-care guides. Buying the listed item is the simplest way to avoid any question about whether a substitute caused a fault later. The range guides also warn against cleansers containing chlorine or chlorine compounds, which corrode stainless steel, and they ask you to wipe with the grain. The Masterpiece steam ovens, models MEDS301WS and MEDS302WS, need regular descaling: you pour 200 ml of descaler into the tank with 3½ cups (800 ml) of water, let the cycle work for roughly 70-90 minutes, and a quick strip test of your tap water beforehand shows how often that cycle is needed.
- REPLFLTR55: the Freedom Water Filter, listed for all freezer and bottom-freezer models
- 00576697: Thermador Stainless Steel Conditioner for range surfaces
- 00573828: descaler powder for the Masterpiece steam ovens
- 10008170: descaler liquid for the same ovens
- 00056317: water hardness test strips
Finding the right part number
Every parts order and every warranty call begins with two numbers from the rating plate: the E-Nr., which is the model number, and the FD, the production number that identifies when that particular unit was built. Components can change during a model's production life, so two appliances with the same model number may take different parts, and the FD is what tells them apart. Write both down, or take a clear photo of the plate, before you phone anyone. Where the plate lives depends on the appliance.
- Pro Grand and Pro Harmony ranges: above the main oven or behind the kick plate, depending on the model
- Masterpiece wall ovens and steam ovens: on the left-hand side of the door trim, visible with the door open
- Refrigerators: on a label inside the refrigerator compartment, on the right side near the door
Before you book a visit
With the plate numbers and the delivery date in hand, you can tell quickly which situation applies. Inside the first two years, contact Thermador first. Between years three and twelve on a built-in refrigerator, a cooling failure may fall under the sealed-system terms, so ask whoever diagnoses it to state plainly whether the fault is in the sealed system or in a fan, a sensor or a control board, none of which belong to that extended coverage. Outside every window, the choice is the one you would make for any repair: the part and the visit weighed against the age and condition of the appliance. A short written note of the symptom, any message on the display and the two plate numbers let a technician bring the likely parts on the first trip, which is the whole idea behind our guide on why some repairs take two visits. For appliances past their coverage, our Thermador repair page explains what we work on across San Diego.
Questions
Answers before you call
Does the Thermador warranty cover labor or only parts?
For the first two years it covers both parts and labor on the entire appliance. After that, only built-in refrigerators keep extended coverage: sealed-system parts and labor in years 3 to 6, sealed-system parts only in years 7 to 12, and lifetime parts-only coverage for stainless rust-through. That is a two-minute call to SK Appliance Repair on (858) 251-7380.
Will an independent repair or a third-party part void my Thermador warranty?
Not by itself, according to the warranty statement in Thermador's Pro Grand and Pro Harmony range guide. Thermador does not accept responsibility for damage caused by work from providers outside its service network, though, so while labor is still covered it usually makes sense to go through Thermador first. SK Appliance Repair, San Diego: (858) 251-7380.
Where do I find the numbers Thermador asks for on a warranty call?
Look for the rating plate, which carries the E-Nr. model number and the FD production number. On ranges it sits above the main oven or behind the kick plate, on Masterpiece ovens it is on the left side of the door trim, and in refrigerators it is inside the fresh-food compartment on the right near the door. Say so when you call SK Appliance Repair on (858) 251-7380.
